For many today, there is no reason to refuse to tell the courts what you know. It is easier to just tell all and go your way, but for some, this is not so easy. Especially when it come to the protection of someone else.
Christian News reports:
A federal judge held a Mennonite minister in contempt of court on Thursday after refusing to testify for reasons of “faith and conscience” at the trial of a Virginia man who is being accused of aiding an ex-lesbian turned professing Christian who fled the country with her daughter in 2009 to escape a court order.
Kenneth Miller, who is currently serving a 27-month sentence in a federal prison in Vermont for likewise helping Lisa Miller—no relation—flee to Nicaragua, is now potentially facing new charges and a longer prison sentence for declining to testify against others.
This tangled story has had many twists, but the facts are really simple. A woman meets and enters a civil union with another woman. Then, through artificial insemination, the woman gives birth to a daughter.
After a couple of years, she realizes that her partner is not good for the daughter and leaves. She moves to a different state and wins custody, but the partner retains visitation rights.
During these visits, strange things occur, and it seems that the daughter is being abused. All the while, the mother claims to have turned to Christ and is seeking to live according to the Bible. The mother then chooses to keep the daughter from the partner. The courts say she cannot do that and threaten to give the partner full custody, but the mother flees the country with the daughter before they can.
This pastor and several others helped her escape and are now serving time. But Pastor Miller is now facing new charges for refusing to testify against others in the case.
There is no doubt that Miller has done the right thing helping the woman, and he will not help prosecute others for doing right.
I pray that he will not get extra time, but that if he does, he will resign himself to the One that judges righteously.
