A daycare owner told Baltimore police that there was molestation taking place at her daycare and that several parent and teachers had informed her about it.  When they failed to act, she ended up shooting her husband because he was the culprit.  Her husband was a cop.  Now, they both are sitting in jail.

Shanteari Weems, 50, shot her husband, James S. Weems Jr., 57, in the head, after she learned he had sexually abused several of the children at the daycare.

The Baltimore Banner reported on July 24, 2022:

A Randallstown woman who was arrested and charged with shooting her husband at a Washington, D.C., hotel last week told police that she shot the man over accusations of child molestation at a Baltimore County daycare she owns.

D.C. Metropolitan police said Friday that Shanteari Weems, 50, has been charged with assault with intent to kill. Weems has also been charged with possession of an unregistered firearm, possession of unregistered ammunition and carrying a pistol without a license, according to police and court records.

Weems is the owner of Lil Kidz Kastle in Owings Mills, according to documents on the daycare’s website and property records. Baltimore County police said they are aware of the case and have closed the daycare while they investigate.

“Baltimore County detectives are currently monitoring the recent developments in Washington D.C. Due to the sensitive circumstances leading up to this incident, the Baltimore County Police Department continues to support the families impacted,” wrote Sgt. Gladys Brown, a public information officer for the Baltimore County Police Department.

The outlet then followed up on the 26th:

James S. Weems Jr., 57, a former Baltimore Police officer who left the force in 2008, faces 13 counts related to three victims, including two counts of third-degree sex offense, three counts of second-degree assault and one count of displaying obscene material to a minor.

County police said they had been investigating since earlier this month, but did not immediately provide additional details.

According to court documents, Shanteari Weems said during an interview with police that she had received “multiple messages and phone calls from parents and teachers” about molestation at the Owings Mills daycare.

Shanteari Weems told police that she confronted her husband in the hotel room Thursday, which escalated into a heated argument. At one point James Weems moved towards her, she told police, which is when she pulled her gun from her purse and shot him.

D.C. police also found a notebook in the hotel room with handwritten notes in which the author wrote that they wanted to shoot the victim but not kill him, but maybe cause paralysis, and that they “want these kids to get justice.” The notebook also included an informal will distributing belongings.

Shanteari Weems has been charged with assault with intent to kill and firearms charges. She was scheduled to appear in D.C. Superior Court Monday, but the hearing was postponed until Friday.

Mr. Weems’ LinkedIn page shows that he was in the Marine Corps from 1983 to 1987 and joined the Baltimore Police Department in 1996.  He left BPD in 2008 while working as a contractor after medically retiring from the force in 2005.

However, support for Mrs. Weems has been tremendous and for good reason.

#FreeShanteari has been trending on Twitter with users demanding her release and charges be dropped.

WUSA9 reported on the support:

…despite the alleged violence, at least a dozen supporters crowded into the virtual courtroom at D.C. Superior Court Monday morning in hopes of seeing Weems released pending trial.

On TikTok, Twitter, and other social media platforms, advocates are sending messages under the hashtag #FreeShanteari. Some are asking how they can contribute to her legal defense.

“She’s placed complaints to the proper authorities before… and her cries for help went unanswered,” said Qiana Johnson, of the group called Harriet’s Wildest Dreams, which is led by former organizers of Black Lives Matter DC.

Baltimore County Police say their investigation of the child abuse allegations is still open.

“Our public, our government, did not keep her or the children safe,” said Johnson.

When you report these things to the police and they do absolutely nothing, possibly because it was one of their own, what are you to do?  Continue to allow the evil to go on despite the fact it is your spouse?  I think not and I cannot bring myself to condemn this woman at this point.  Time will tell whether or not Mr. Weems was doing what he is accused of doing.  If that evidence is verified and he gets due process, Mrs. Weems should be released and not charged but rather heralded as a hero.  If the evidence proves otherwise, then she should be held accountable.  We’ll see what happens.
