Previously Deported Illegal Alien Suspected of 10-year-Old Texas Girl’s Murder

Police say a previously deported illegal alien is now the suspect in the murder of a 10-year-old East Texas girl.

On Sunday, Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith said the body of Kayla Gomez, 10, was found in a well on Saturday night, about three miles from where she disappeared. She had disappeared from Bullard First Assembly Church while a prayer service was going on the previous Tuesday.

East Texas Matters reports:

The family member who is believed responsible for her death is currently being on an U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer. He is currently in the Smith County Jail. No bond has been set. The man’s name has not been released, but officials say the relative is either 23-years or 24-years-old.

According to a law enforcement source, the man is in the country illegally and had been previously deported for a violent crime in 2014. He has been identified to KETK as Gustavo Zavala, 24, of Bullard, according to the source. Judicial records show Zavala was arrested for assault causing bodily injury twice in 2014.

A motive in the homicide has not been released.

On Saturday night, a law enforcement told KETK the person responsible for Kayla’s death is an uncle. A family member says the man is a cousin who “acted like an uncle to Kayla.”

Gomez’s body was sent to Dallas for an autopsy on Sunday morning to determine the cause of death.

Zavala has been confirmed to be a Mexican national.

Breitbart adds, “Smith County jail records show that the arrest of Gonzalez was made by Texas Rangers assigned to assist Cherokee County in the investigation. Breitbart Texas reached out to the Texas Department of Public Safety for additional information. No spokesperson was immediately available for comment.”

A vigil was held on Sunday at Jack Elementary School and Brook Hill School in Bullard for Kayla.

One has to wonder whether Zavala will find his way out of jail again under the current administration or will actually have justice served upon him. After all, he is in Texas and they still carry out the death penalty, which is appropriate should he be found guilty.
