Rand Paul: John Bolton Shouldn’t Be “Anywhere near the State Department”
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has been a Constitutional voice in the senate more than any other senator, including Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX). When asked about the recent consideration of Council on Foreign Relations member and former United Nations ambassador John Bolton for Secretary of State before Rex Tillerson was tapped for the job, Paul said that the he should not be “anywhere near the State Department.”
ON MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Paul said, “I’m trying to think of a nice word, but I can’t think of a nice word. But what I would say is he’s dangerous.”
“He has a naive understanding of the world, and I don’t want him anywhere near the State Department, because he’s an unrepentant advocate of regime change and the Iraq war, and hasn’t learned any of the lessons of the last two decades,” Paul added.
Though no weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq, host Joe Scarborough asked Paul if he thought the invasion of Iraq in 2003 was right.
“He promoted a false assumption, the WMDs, but also he promoted that it would be very quick, we wouldn’t have to stay very long, no big deal,” said Paul. “But he’s still promoting the same thing. He says the Iraq War was justified and he’d do it again.”
“Not only that, he’s promoting the same kind of thing for Iran,” Paul added. “He would bomb Iran and has said it repeatedly over and over again. His only argument is we didn’t bomb them soon enough. He would still bomb Iran and he thinks it would be a cake walk, we would be greeted as liberators. We would have embassies open in 20 days.”
“It’s a naive understanding and we don’t need any more of that in the State Department,” he concluded.
I agree, promotion of illegal foreign wars that are not in line with the Constitution is problematic. Now, we are currently sending troops into at least four countries illegally under the rule of law (the Constitution), and perhaps more.
CFR members should always be suspect, in my opinion, as the CFR is clearly an anti-American organization. Paul is right, anyone coming from there should not be considered for any public office.
Still, Bolton is being considered for a position in the Trump administration, which is quickly filling up with neo-cons and establishment types. It’s becoming more of the cesspool in the swamp, if you ask me.
