Ready for What’s Coming Next?

90-year-old former President Jimmy Carter recently revealed that he is being treated for melanoma cancer that has now spread to his brain. One of his comments was, “Now I feel it is in the hands of God, whom I worship, and I’ll be prepared for anything that comes.” Regardless of your views of Mr. Carter’s theology and political views, we all do well to consider the content of his comment.

Much of our life is spent getting ready, preparing for something that lies ahead. Whether it’s getting an education, a project deadline at work, an athletic team anticipating their next opponent, investing finances, personal grooming, making meals, cleaning a house, planning a social event or a trip, we do well to take the time and put forth the efforts to make the necessary preparations for what we see is coming.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Our nation is facing significant events and consequences for which most of us are not adequately prepared. How can we be adequately prepared for demonized people wielding guns, sexual predators, impending economic collapse, food and water shortages, rioting in and burning of our major cities, the establishment of martial law, a lying news media, the proliferation of evil leaders at nearly every level of society, foreign invasions, wars, increased persecution of true believers in Jesus Christ, the vile mental programming from much of the internet and movies, the homosexual agenda, the rapid spread of Islam and increased natural disasters?

Webster’s New World Dictionary defines “ready” as “prepared or equipped to act immediately…waiting to be used…available immediately”. The old-time preachers of the gospel urged us to be ready to “preach, pray or die” and be ready for the return of Jesus Christ.

A “prepper” is often stereotyped as a wild-eyed “crazy” building an underground bunker in a remote area, stockpiling enough packaged food to last 30 years and enough guns and ammo to supply a small militia, or now someone simply moving to a “safer place” in some other country. It is certainly wise to make some physical, off-grid preparations for what we know is coming. But of far greater importance is my answer to the question: Am I spiritually ready right now, and for whatever is coming my way in the future?

The greatest preparation we can make is to be sure our hearts are right with God. In these troubling days, He wants us to live in His peace and rest without fear of whatever disasters and judgments are coming upon America. Peter thought he was ready to go to prison and death for the sake of Christ (Luke 22:33-34). Jesus told him rather that die for Him he was going to deny Him. Though Peter denied that he even knew Jesus, he repented, was forgiven and eventually boldly proclaimed the gospel and was crucified upside down for the cause of Christ.

The Apostle Paul declared, “So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you who are at Rome also. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ; for it is the power of God unto salvation to every on that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek [Gentile].” (Romans 1:15-16) He later said, “…I am ready not to be bound only, but to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” Acts 21:13b). His final words to his spiritual son of the faith of Jesus, Timothy, include: “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” (II Timothy 4:6-8)

In view the onslaught of world-shaking events lining up even now, make sure your heart and life are right with God and your faith is truly in Jesus Christ, the one and only Savior of the world. The Psalmist David wrote, “For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.”

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13

Make sure your whole armor is on “And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace” (Ephesians 6:15).

“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear” (I Peter 3:15).

Jesus told his disciples to be alert, watch for His coming and be caught in the act of serving Him when He arrives. “Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh” (Matthew 24:44).

By God’s Word, Spirit and grace, you and I can live ready for whatever comes our way today and in the days to come; and know God is always fully ready to provide all that is needed at just the right time for those who trust Him.
