“Whomsoever the Lord has adopted and deemed worthy of His fellowship ought to prepare themselves for a hard, toilsome and unquiet life, crammed with very many and various kinds of evil.” –John Calvin
Quite often, you see and hear about people who think that the Christian life is very easy, but that is just exactly the opposite of what a true Christian’s life really is. This is what we are going to talk about today…
Let me ask you a question. Have you ever noticed that almost every time you walk in a church building that you see posters all over the place that say things like this?
“The Christian life… Love, joy, peace, and happiness.” Galatians 5:22
This IS true, but what about when it says in the bible, “Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it” (Matthew 7:14).
Or what about when you experience trials, temptations, and persecution. They fail to mention the hard part of a true Christian’s life, don’t they? The Bible says in 2 Timothy 3:12 “All those that live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” Ephesians 6:10-18
Why did the Lord tell us this in His Word? It’s because He knew that a true Christian would have to fight! He also knew that a Christian’s life would sometimes be difficult. He would not give us armor for no reason (1 Timothy 6:12).
A true Christian will put on the full armor of God and fight the good fight of faith always and it will not be easy. But if you truly love God, you will do anything for Him. John 14:21 If you do not, then you are not a true Christian. 1 John 2:4
Remember, the Christian life is a constant fight!
