The following is a list of several “good reports,” things taking place in our world that are worth looking at in the midst of all the bad things occurring as of October 20, 2022.

Math professor shows how adding and subtracting left to right is actually easier and faster

Math is weird.

On the one hand, it’s consistent—the solutions to basic math problems are the same in every country in the world. On the other hand, there are multiple strategies to get to those solutions, and it seems like people are still coming up with new ones (much to the chagrin of parents whose kids need help with homework using methods they’ve never learned).

Math professor Howie Hua shares math strategies that make math easier on social media, and his videos are fascinating. Hua, who teaches math to future elementary school teachers at Fresno State, demonstrates all kinds of mental math tricks that feel like magic when you try them.

For instance, Hua has two videos showing how easy and quick it is to add multidigit numbers left to right instead of right to left, and it’s genuinely mind-blowing.

Check out how he explains why adding left to right is “underrated.”

Good Samaritan climbs into horrific school bus wreckage, stays with injured driver until help arrives: ‘What’s amazing is I was running late today. Tell me why?’

A Good Samaritan was captured on video climbing into horrific school bus wreckage — the driver slammed into a pole after dropping off all students in the Pittsburgh area Wednesday morning — and staying with the injured driver until rescue crews arrived.

Kenny Ferree, the man who rushed to the accident scene to help the driver, posed a question to KDKA-TV with otherworldly implications: “What’s amazing is I was running late today. Tell me why?”

Ferree told WPXI-TV he was driving down Ardmore Boulevard in Forest Hills with his wife when they heard a loud boom and saw yellow debris flying through the air: “I saw the windshield, the front hood assembly, the front axle, just rolling down the street, this big plume of smoke. It was a school bus.”

With that, Ferree pulled into a Taco Bell parking lot and ran to the bus, which was wrapped around a steel post underneath a Forest Hills sign, WPXI noted.

“When you looked over, you could not believe that anything or anybody was left,” Ferree added to WPXI. “It disintegrated.”

Ferree noted to KDKA that the driver “looked like he was still conscious, just kind of shaken up. I crawled up into the wreckage, the closest I could get to him. His head was bleeding. I had nothing with me; I’m covered in blood. I took my shirt off, and I wrapped my shirt around his head and put his head back, and I held him.”

He also spoke to the driver for the next several minutes until paramedics arrived, WPXI reported: “I asked him, ‘Are you empty?’ And he said, ‘I’m empty.’ He kept saying, ‘I’m empty.’ There were no kids. You could see. [The bus] was split like a banana.” –Read the rest

Toddler with muscle condition stands on own for first time as proud mother looks on

A mother captured the heartwarming moment her toddler, who has a muscle condition, stood by herself unaided.

Jessica Quarello documented two-year-old Adeline standing on her own as sister Charlee, 5, watched on, in a TikTok video.

The content creator explained that the moment was “huge” as Adeline has Down’s syndrome and hypotonia, with the latter creating low muscle tone.

“The reaction was unbelievable… Walking was a huge milestone for Adeline due to her diagnosis of hypotonia which is common for individuals with Down syndrome,” Quarello said.

Youth Given 8 Months to Live Has Beaten Aggressive Blood Cancer, Now Inspires Others: ‘You can get through anything’

A young Florida man given just eight months to live has beaten a rare and aggressive blood cancer, after nearly dying multiple times during treatments. Now he is inspiring others who are going through health hardships.

Michael Cramer went to see a doctor after suffering fatigue, night sweats, and weight loss—symptoms he thought were caused by the stress of COVID-19 lockdowns—but the blood test showed something was wrong and he was told to see a blood specialist immediately.

The 21-year-old was then diagnosed with Hepatosplenic T-cell Lymphoma (HSTCL) in July 2020. He and his his mother Ashlee Cramer then heard the terrifying news that most people do not survive it, and Michael may have just eight months to live.

He underwent three rounds of intensive chemotherapy at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami before receiving a bone marrow transplant later that summer.

The transplant resulted in a severe complication called Graft vs. Host Disease (GVHD), where the donor cells attack the host cells. Over the next 18 months, GVHD affected Michael’s skin, his gastrointestinal tract, and then his liver went into failure and nearly killed him.

“The transplant was horrible. I felt so low,” he told SWNS. “It was a long, slow journey of hospital trips, infusions, and so many setbacks.

“I had my gallbladder removed, which left my stomach paralyzed. Then I got avascular necrosis in both of my knees that could have made me unable to walk.”

At the start of 2022, his skin was yellow from the liver failure and receiving so many different, intense treatments that his body was just overwhelmed.

But this June, Michael started a new treatment at the University of Miami Cancer Institute, called extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP).

Michael is now in full remission and is sharing his miraculous journey on TikTok and Instagram, and has produced a podcast with his mother, called Michael and Mom Talk Cancer. –Read the rest

He Taught Parents How to Play Drums and Bass So he’d Have People to Jam With–Now They Have Album–WATCH

A New Zealander taught both his parents how to play the drums and the bass so he would have people to jam with—and now they have an album out.

Ryan Stokes couldn’t have his friends over to jam during lockdown so he decided to teach his parents how to play instruments.

Inspired by The White Stripes, a two-piece rock band, the 20-year-old guitarist initially taught his 55-year-old mom to play the drums. Two months later, his 60-year-old father picked up an electric bass for the first time.

The family appropriately named their band ‘Mommas Boy’, with Ryan crushing songs as the frontman vocalist, while Andrea Stokes keeps time on drums and Lyndon plucks the bass—all with with a lot of competence.

The trio has been practicing three to four times-a-week and they now have an album out called ‘Who Would Have Thought’, released in April on the band’s Spotify account.

“They were pestered to start the band by their very eager son,” joked Ryan, who was born in Hamilton, Scotland. “I had nothing to do during lockdown and wanted to play music.

“Mum loved the White Stripes—especially Meg White and was very excited to learn to drum like her.”

After a quick lesson on the drum kit in the garage, Ryan says “Sure enough she had a strong beat within an hour and was ready to play within three hours.” (See the video at the bottom…)

Both of the middle-aged newbies adapted to the rockstar life very quickly, appearing in videos on TikTok hours after picking up instruments for the first time.

The group quickly won the hearts of the internet, accumulating 72,000 followers on TikTok since their formation— with 700,000 views.
