Trump’s Unconstitutional Oval Office Sermon
There is only one “God” Trump worships, and that is himself.
Donald Trump never wearies of violating the Constitution and the Bill of Rights he supposedly swore an oath to uphold on Inauguration Day. The latest outrage against James Madison, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson arrived on April 19 when it was announced Trump will read from the Bible in the Oval Office on Tuesday, April 21, between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET , specifically Chronicles 7:11–22.
According to the passage, God promises to hear prayers and forgive sins if His people humble themselves and seek Him. However, if they forsake Him and worship other gods, He will reject the temple and bring disaster upon the land.
There is only one “God” Trump worships, and that is himself. Jesus comes in second. In fact, some argue Trump is the antichrist, most recently for posting AI imagery of himself as Jesus healing the sick, and also for insulting the Pope.
Trump has either not read the First Amendment or doesn’t agree with it despite swearing an oath to the Constitution. I wager, if asked, Trump would be unable to recite or summarize the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. The clause prevents the government from establishing an official religion or favoring one religion over another.
The president has not officially declared a state religion. However, he continues to frequently hold prayer meetings with evangelical leaders in the Oval Office, including his so-called “spiritual leader,” Paula White-Cain, an animated pastor, author, and televangelist. Trump appointed her to lead the newly created office focused on faith-based initiatives.
The initiatives include the establishment the White House Faith Office and, prior to the Faith Office, the Faith and Opportunity Initiative, which was active during his first term and gave faith-based organizations taxpayer money. The earlier White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships was disbanded in 2021.
I consider these initiatives to be nothing short of violations of the spirit and law of the First Amendment. Trump’s Centers for Faith and Opportunity Initiatives were established within various federal agencies, a direct violation of the Establishment Clause. Additionally, Trump’s Task Force to Eradicate Anti-Christian Bias represents an affront to the First Amendment, as it is not the role of the federal government to “eradicate” the “bias” of people who criticize Christianity.
The Trump administration’s policies and actions, such as executive orders and cabinet appointments, disregard the First Amendment’s religious liberty guarantees. According to a report by The Law, Rights, and Religion Project, there are numerous areas in which the Trump administration is seeking to advance ostensibly conservative Christian tenets, restrict the rights of religious minorities, and break down the barrier between church and state.
Enactment of the administration’s policy priorities would call into question the careful balance that currently exists between the First Amendment and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution. The report, entitled Church, State & the Trump Administration, highlights how the new administration’s early executive actions and cabinet nominations, as well as his campaign rhetoric and proposed policies, indicate hostility toward religious liberty guarantees of the First Amendment and an intentional disregard for other fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
As the study points out, “President Trump and cabinet appointees appear to hold a deeply flawed understanding of the First Amendment, and particularly the Establishment Clause, which prohibits the government from favoring or disfavoring any religious group or belief.”
Trump’s sermon this week will be like a scene cut from Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, a novel based in the fictional nation of Gilead, a monolithic, patriarchal, totalitarian theocracy that has overthrown the United States government.
