The Unbelievable, Extraordinary and Miraculous… White Shoelace!

This past Sunday, we were in the car for a little over two hours or so.  I was in the back with three of our boys and our six-year-old son Israel (we call him Izzy) was sitting right next to me.  He had brought along with him for the car ride one simple white shoelace. As I observed him during the course of our two hour trip, I watched as he made complete fun out of something so simple. I have never seen a kid be so creative in my life when it came to one simple shoestring. He used it as a seatbelt, a catapult, a slide for his pin, to bind his legs, as reins around the seat in front of him to steer the seat as a make believe horse and more!

As I was observing him, I realized that there was a lesson to be learned in this.  I was watching a wonderful illustration of how he used what he had, although it was not much (even down right plain and simple), but he found the joy in it.  It makes me think of how there are many people in life who feel plain and simple – ordinary.  They think they do not have much to offer. How could the Lord possibly use them? They are simple people: a housewife, a mechanic, a school teacher, babysitter, construction worker, it could be anything.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

They think they are plain and simple much like Izzy’s string. After all, there’s not much you can do with a string, right? Wrong (just ask Izzy).  To them they are unlike those they see with many talents and gifts.  They do not think they speak well, sing well, write well or have the kind of talents they think are necessary to make a difference in this world for Christ. They are low in their own eyes, seeing themselves as small and unusable, but what they don’t realize, is God sees an entirely different story. As Martin Luther, the great reformer, rightfully said, “God creates out of nothing. Therefore, until a man is nothing, God can make nothing out of him.”

The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 1:26-31:

“For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.”

God never chose a man or woman in the Bible because they were so spectacular and wonderful in their own eyes. In fact, just the opposite occurred. God chose those weak things, the ones that man wouldn’t pick because of their seeming inability. These were just the sort of people that God had His eye on!

Look at Gideon for example. In Judges 6:15, Gideon said, “Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.”

Or how about Moses? He was slow of speech. This is what Moses said to the Lord in Exodus 4: 10-12, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.” But what did the Lord remind him of after he said this? The Lord said unto him, “Who hath made man’s mouth? Or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? Have not I the Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.”

Or how about David, the one the Lord had chosen to be the King of Israel? Even the prophet Samuel (who was a man of God) looked upon David’s brother to be king before David. Even Samuel did not see what the Lord saw. But the LORD said unto Samuel, “Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart (I Samuel 16:7). God saw in David, what nobody else did…The King of Israel. Just as the Lord sees in you, what nobody else may.

You may think you’re nothing but a plain old simple shoelace. Up until this point in your life, you may not have ever seen your true use and purpose. But just as that shoelace became everything imaginable on our car ride on Sunday, it became that way because it was in the hands of a six-year-old boy who didn’t see its limits…but its possibilities. He viewed it as something way beyond a piece of string and so does Christ with you!

You, in the hands of Almighty God, are nothing ordinary. Do you think of Moses, King David or Gideon as being ordinary? They did, but in the Lord’s hands and through His strength and power, they did extraordinary things! God can do the same thing through you, if you yield yourself to Him and His creative purpose for your life. God does not use you for your abilities, He uses you for your availabilities. He sees beyond what you can see, He knows way beyond what you know. My six-year-old son took the simplest thing in the world and made it into everything imaginable, because he was looking through a child’s limitless eyes. Just imagine what the Lord can do with you, looking at you through His eyes!

So, the next time you take a look in the mirror, or tie up your shoe strings, rather than seeing something plain and simple, why don’t you see the miraculous! In the hands of Almighty God you can go face to face with Pharaoh (as Moses did), defeat the Midianites (as Gideon did) or take down the giant, defiant Goliath (as David did)! Now is the time to take a stand for Christ and let your life be spent for His purposes in an extraordinary way!
