Unscriptural Free-Will Decisions For Christ: What Fruit Are They Bringing Forth?

“Free will carries many a soul to hell, but never a soul to Heaven.” -Charles Haddin Spurgeon

“Free will, without God’s grace, is not free at all, but is the perennate prisoner and bondslave of evil, since it cannot turn itself to good.” -Martin Luther

Thousands made decisions for Christ throughout Franklin Graham’s 14-day “God Loves You” tour, helmed by top Christian artists, including the Newsboys and Marcos Witt.

“Graham, the son of late famed evangelist Billy Graham and who has led the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) since 2001, traveled to eight cities preaching the Gospel at free events.

More than 56,000 people attended the free outdoor events along Route 66 that began in the Chicago area on Sept. 19 and finished outside Los Angeles in San Bernardino, California, on Saturday. Over 5,000 people indicated they made decisions for Jesus Christ at the events, a BGEA spokesperson told The Christian Post.”

“The 69-year-old evangelist, who has shared the Gospel at nearly 200 evangelistic events worldwide since 1989, quoted Ephesians 2:8-9:

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Notice what Franklin Graham stated at the end of the article with reference to Ephesians 2-8-9.

Again,“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Let me add verse 10 concerning being empowered by that grace and what it produces:

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

So, if we are born of the Spirit of God, then we will do what the Spirit leads us to do (Romans 8:14).

Free-will to make decisions for christ?

Free-will, we are hearing much of it today, but I ask free-will to do what? To make decisions for Christ. We are hearing much of this from the hirelings across this country for decades (John 10:12).

How many of these have made decisions for Christ out of their free -will have instead lived for the things of the flesh while disobeying the Spirit?

King David wrote in the book of Psalms: “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me” (Psalm 51:5).

How does the carnal man choose to serve a spiritual God? He cannot!

Paul wrote in Romans 7:18: “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.”

Jesus was recorded saying in John 3:5-6:

“Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

Throughout Scripture, you will find where the Lord called them, led them (Numbers 12:6; Judges 6:11-24; Matthew 4:19) or He would appear unto them (Acts 9:3).

Charles Spurgeon said:

“Once there was free will in paradise, and a terrible mess free will made there, for it spoiled all paradise and turned Adam out of the garden. Free will was once in heaven, but it turned the glorious archangel out, and a third part of the stars of heaven fell into the abyss. I want nothing to do with free will, but I will try to see whether I have got a free will within. And I find I have.  Very free will to do evil, but very poor will to do that which is good.” –The Complete Sermons of C. H. Spurgeon, Book 1

Friends, you cannot “free-will” TO LIVE FOR CHRIST through making a decision to be born again (John 3:3) without the Holy Ghost bringing you to godly repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10-11).

As a matter of fact, I am commanded by God to work out my salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12), but I cannot add one jot or one tittle in adding to my growth in Christ but by the Holy Ghost through regeneration and renewing.  Much of what is seen today is man-made conversions, and what fruit has it brought forth? I answer with more sons and daughters of hell than ever before (Matthew 23:15).

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;” -Titus 3:5

“Mankind has a free-will; but it it is free to milk cows and to build houses, nothing more.” -Martin Luther

George Whitfield, weighing out the genuine from the false man-made converts, said:

“Now I wait a little, and see if people bring forth fruit; for there are so many blossoms which March wind blow away that I cannot believe they are converts till I see the fruit brought forth.”

Man today is taught, through his emotional response without the Holy Ghost bringing forth conviction of sin (John 16:8) unto repentance towards God (Acts 20:21), to come to the altar, which is not scriptural, but man-made, and make a decision for Jesus rather than being driven to the cross by the law where it can do no more (Galatians 3:24), and the fruit shows itself for what and who they are.

Before touting your free will around and putting your hand on God’s glory, remember that Scripture teaches us, “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13).

In conclusion: R.C. Sproul stated: “No human being can possibly come to Christ unless something happens that makes it possible for him to come. That necessary condition Jesus declares is that …It has been granted to him by the Father” (John 6:44).

Remember friends, “When your will is God’s will, you will have your will.” ― Charles Spurgeon
