It would be crazy to think that anybody’s bulletproof, right? Well, back in the day of George Washington, it was not so crazy. Have you ever heard the story of the bulletproof George Washington? Probably not. However, this amazing account of God’s providential protection of Washington during the French and Indian war is a story that once appeared in many history textbooks.
In 1755, as a young man, George Washington was in a ferocious battle at Fort Duquesne during the French and Indian War. During this battle, he was shot at from all directions. In fact, he had two horses shot out from under him, but he was the only officer not shot off his horse at the battle. Washington found many bullet holes in his coat and hat, but he himself was unharmed by them.
A particular Indian chief named Red Hawk fought against Washington at Fort Duquesne. He told the story that he himself tried shooting at Washington 11 different times, but was unable to hit him. This was remarkable because his gun had never before missed its mark. Because of this, Red Hawk ceased firing at Washington because he was convinced that the Great Spirit protected him. No doubt, God was watching over him (Psalms 91:7-8).
George Washington’s escape from the many hardships and toils to which he was exposed to in that battle were so plainly miraculous that even the Reverend Samuel Davies made mention of it in a famous sermon preached by him only weeks after the battle. He said of Washington, “… I cannot but hope Providence has hitherto preserved in so signal a manner for some important service to his country.”
Well, the Reverend Samuel Davies was right when 20 years later it was quite apparent that God had indeed chosen Washington for “important service to his country,” and here we are hundreds of years later and we are still benefiting from the heroic actions of George Washington and how God used him in the establishment of our country.
