We are Christ’s Ekklesia

Why has America fallen into such an immoral state? Primarily because Christian leaders have believed a series of lies that has deceived them from exercising their God-given authority in their communities. They have been told that “the church should not be involved in government.” As it was in Christ’s day, many of our leaders “Err, not knowing the scriptures.” (Matthew 22:29).

The First “Err” that the modern-day church is making is that they do not understand the authority that we have been given by Christ. After Peter declared Jesus to be “the Christ, He told Peter, “On this rock, I will build My church (ekklesia), and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

The second “err” is that the church has lost the historical understanding of the true function of an Ekklesia. During the time of Christ, there were three institutions, the Temple, The Synagogues and The Ekklesia. The temple was a place of prayer and worship and the Synagogues were a place of teaching.

The ekklesia on the other hand was a place of government administration. The term Ekklesia was a political, judicial and government term. It is a political assembly of citizens of an ancient Greek state. It refers to a convening of citizens to discuss legal matters and handle the administrative affairs of government. It was a place of legal counsel. It referred to those who had the final say in what is lawful and what is not lawful.

Today, the modern-day American church is nothing more than a place of prayer, worship and teaching and has neglected their governmental authority that was given by Christ. The early church understood the true function of the Ekklesia and turned the world “Upside down” when they traveled from town to town and declared at the city council meetings that they refused to bow down to the unlawful dictates of Caesar. Instead, declaring that there is a king who outranks Caesar, and He is the Christ. (Acts 17:6-7)
