White House Petition Demands President Call On Congress To Protect Free Speech In The Digital Public Square

The unrest is brewing, and President Donald Trump has warned about it possibly erupting after November, but until then, corporations like Google, Facebook and Twitter are the Gestapo when it comes to political speech, shutting down and shutting out anyone who might speak out against the Socialists and Communists in our country.  Now, a White House petition has been created that calls on President Trump to demand that Congress pass legislation to defend Constitutionally-protected free speech online.

According to the petition, which can be signed here:

The internet is the modern public square. It is where political campaigns are fought and won, where journalism is created and distributed, and where grassroots movements are born. Yet, the free and open internet has become a controlled, censored space, monopolized by a few unaccountable corporations.

By banning users from their platforms, those corporations can effectively remove politically unwelcome Americans from the public square. That is repugnant to our shared values of free speech and freedom of the press.

The President should request that Congress pass legislation prohibiting social media platforms from banning users for First Amendment-protected speech. The power to block lawful content should be in the hands of individual users – not Mark Zuckerberg or Jack Dorsey.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

The petition was posted on Tuesday, and within 24 hours, as of the time of this writing, it had garnered a little over 23,000 signatures.  That’s quite impressive, which means should it get the necessary 100,000 signatures, the White House would have to respond to it, but that doesn’t mean that the petition will be granted, nor does it mean that Congress will listen to either the people or the president.

President Trump seems to be echoing the sentiments of the petition.  In tweets on Tuesday, Trump wrote, “Google search results for “Trump News” shows only the viewing/reporting of Fake News Media. In other words, they have it RIGGED, for me & others, so that almost all stories & news is BAD. Fake CNN is prominent. Republican/Conservative & Fair Media is shut out. Illegal? 96% of results on “Trump News” are from National Left-Wing Media, very dangerous. Google & others are suppressing voices of Conservatives and hiding information and news that is good. They are controlling what we can & cannot see. This is a very serious situation-will be addressed!”

Trump also not only pointed to how news reports were stacked against him in Google searches, but earlier this month he spoke out about the censorship of other conservative voices online.

“Too many voices are being destroyed, some good & some bad, and that cannot be allowed to happen,” Trump wrote. “Who is making the choices, because I can already tell you that too many mistakes are being made.”

“Social Media is totally discriminating against Republican/Conservative voices,” he added.  “Speaking loudly and clearly for the Trump Administration, we won’t let that happen.”

The petition has until September 27, 2018 to obtain the 100,000 signatures.  Click here to sign.
