An 11-year-old St. Louis area boy, who was left at home alone with his 4-year-old sister shot and killed a 16-year-old home invader.

KSDK reports:

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Lamonte Streeter, 16, was shot during what police believe was a home invasion. According to Sgt. Brian Schellman, a spokesperson for the St. Louis County Police Department, the incident occurred on the 10,000 block of Hallwood Drive around 2:25 p.m.

Police believe two suspects attempted to break into the house when an 11-year-old boy inside the home picked up a loaded gun and fired one shot, striking the 16-year-old. The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene inside the home.

The second suspect fled the scene after shots were fired. He was later apprehended by St. Louis County police and has been taken into custody. His name has not yet been released, but police say he is a 22-year-old male.

The body of the 16-year-old was found inside the home and police have indicated that evidence confirms the shooting took place inside the home. However, some neighbors claim that an argument was taking place on the front porch when the shooting occurred.

The mother was not at home at the time of the shooting, but police said that she is cooperating in the investigation. Police are curious as to why the children were left at home and why the 11-year-old had access to a handgun.

According to Fox 2, police believe the gun had been purchased by the mother due to previous attempted home break-in attempts.

The boy’s 4-year-old sister was also in the home at the time of the shooting.

I do understand the concern for why the mother was not at home and why the 11-year-old had access to the handgun. However, in my area of the country, young boys learn early on how to handle a gun safely at an earlier age than 11. That doesn’t mean we leave them out for them to play with at that age.

Whatever the outcome of the investigation, this young boy is a hero for using the weapon in a proper way to defend himself, his sister and their home. From my perspective, I say, “Good job young man!”
