Is it Worth It?

As many of you know, this week marked the death of Robin Williams. He did not die from being tragically murdered, he was not hit by some drunk-driver behind the wheel of a car, nor was he killed from a horrific freak accident. No, he fell to his untimely death …by his own hand. Shocking, tragic, and sad are a few words that come to mind. At the moment he died he met his Maker and had to give an account for everything he did on this earth.

You know, it seems as if you’re going through life and every once in a while you hear things like “so and so died.” Most of the time it’s somebody famous, because if they weren’t famous or well known in some sense, you probably wouldn’t have heard about them. And then if you stop for a minute to think about it, have you ever said to yourself, “He’s or she’s in hell right now?” I have. And just think, there is no turning back and there is nothing they can do about it now! Just ask the rich man in hell in Luke 16:19-31.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

In life, they may have had it all; been rich, famous, popular, beautiful and had everything this world could offer. But in the end, it all meant nothing and was worth nothing. Not one penny of their money could buy their way into heaven. Not one measure of fame or popularity they had here on earth could put them in good standing before Almighty God when they stood before Him in Judgment. The chances the Lord gave them on this earth to know the truth and turn from their wicked ways are now gone, and their eternity for life or death is set. Was anything they had or did on this earth worth their damnation? I think not.

Was any sin or pleasure they indulged in worth spending eternity in everlasting flames of fire and torment (Revelation 21:8)? Now, we don’t come to God for fire insurance to escape hell, but honestly, this is the real ultimate end of all sin… death, eternal death. Life without the Father in total separation from Him in a place of everlasting torment (hell) because they despised the moral Law of God, will be the end of all those who partake and continue in wickedness. And for what?

What actually got me going on this subject was when we were on tour doing high school assembly programs and we stopped to eat at a local restaurant. As I was sitting there, I was looking at an assortment of pictures of famous people on the walls. I saw a picture of Marilyn Monroe and I believe Elvis Presley was on the wall as well, and I thought, “I bet they’d give anything to get out of where they are right now.” All their riches they had on this earth were for such a short time in comparison to eternity.

Is there anything on this earth that is worth losing your soul? Matthew 16:26 says,

“For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”

Think about that, and think about it long and hard. The pleasures of sin only last for a season (Hebrews 11:25), but in the end, all it will bring you… is death. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

God gives each and every one of us a choice. You can either make the choice to be a servant of sin or you can live in freedom by obeying God’s Commandments out of pure, unadulterated love for Him in your heart and find life in Christ as your Savior. After all, to whom the Son makes free is free indeed (John 8:36).

Romans 6:16-18 says, “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.”

What are you a servant to? Sin, or Righteousness? What holds you back from the Lord? Is it your friends? What idols do you have in your life that are keeping you from entering into the Kingdom of Heaven?

For the rich young ruler in Mark 10:17-22, it was his money. He said unto the Lord, “…what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” and Jesus said, “Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honor thy father and mother…” The rich young ruler said, “…all these have I observed from my youth.” And Jesus said unto him, “…One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.”

Jesus placed before him life, just like He does for each one of us, but the rich young ruler chose death. He “…was sad at that saying and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.” The love of his riches kept him from the Lord. What is it for you? It can be anything! Anything that you put in front of the Lord. But is it worth your soul?

Just think how the rich young ruler’s life would have been different if he would have had obeyed the Lord and did what He said. He saved his material possessions on earth, but lost his eternal soul forever. Will this be your end? Will you stand before God on your judgment day unchanged with damnation at your door and this article ringing in your ears? Nothing in this world will be worth the end you will face if you refuse to listen. The choice is up to you. Is anything on this earth worth losing your soul? No one will be able to determine that, but you. Think about it!
