Future Shock has become Present Shock

“For I am the LORD, I change not; …” – Malachi 3:6a

As a teen in 7th grade, I remember being shown in health class the documentary, “Future Shock.” The documentary was based upon a book written in 1970 under the same title by futurist author, Alvin Toffler. Toffler defines Future Shock as “too much change in too short a period of time.”

After recently viewing the old film again, it was disturbing to see how accurately the events predicted have come to pass in the 40 years since it was first placed on cellophane. Narrated by Orson Wells, the film predicts a very transient society with families being geographically separated. Discussed by Wells is the increasing of throw away items from food packaging to dolls as a matter of convenience. The film looks at the promotion of new types of marriages from group “marriage” to same sex “marriage” and delves into man’s quest for immortality through cryogenics and manipulation of DNA. That said, “Future Shock” is now “Present Shock,” because we have seen all of this happen in our lifetime.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Just like the film displays, we have become out of convenience a throw-away society from food packaging to our unborn and elderly. We’ve seen people more concerned about a lion killed than the thousands of babies whose lives are ended each day in abortion factories. Americans have lowered the value of traditional marriage and the family. Women’s rights have become women’s wrongs as children are raised by daycares, distant relatives and sometimes casual acquaintances.

Evolutionists are thrilled to be assisting Darwinism along by taking us to the post-human era. By genetic engineering, eternal life is being promised through brain and consciousness modeling. According to an organization known as the 2045 Strategic Social Initiative, which was created by Russian entrepreneur Dmitry Itskov, by the year 2045, scientists hope to be able to take a person’s consciousness and transfer it to a cybernetic host or avatar that can basically run forever with occasional replacement parts. Thus enabling perceived immortality to people who can afford it. What has been labeled today as transhumanism is not only possible, but is being indoctrinated into our children’s minds through the likes of superhuman super heroes on the big screen and comic books. Just like Future Shock was shown to our generation as teens, our children are being exposed to what their future shock will be forty years from now and it’s not pretty. More on this to come later.

In an ever-changing world, we can take solace in our God, who does not change. He is the only constant in our universe and inhabits the praise of His people. The future does not need to be a shock to all who trust in Jesus Christ. Instead, let us we keep our eyes on the One who is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8).
