Over $100 Million Was Donated to California Fire Victims, Victims Received NOTHING

The devastating aftermath of the Palisades and Eaton fires made national and worldwide news with more than 2,000 homes/businesses destroyed and 30 killed. Two FireAid concerts with live streams were held at the Intuit Dome and the Kia Forum on January 30 in Los Angeles. An A-list of performers donated their time to raise money for fire victims. More than $100 million came through donations. This editor reached out to the Annenberg Foundation, which was tasked with distributing funds, in April to find out how fire victims could receive direct financial help. The answer was the money was intended for nonprofits, no individual could receive money even though it was intended for fire victims (Circling the News).

The January 2025 wildfires in Los Angeles, most notably the Palisades and Eaton fires, left a devastating mark on the region. More than 16,000 structures were destroyed, including homes, businesses, schools, and community buildings. Some estimates place the total as high as 16,251 structures lost, with over 200 more damaged. These fires further deepened an already critical homelessness crisis in Los Angeles County, which had more than 75,000 unhoused residents even before the disaster. The sudden displacement of thousands more, many without insurance or stable housing, strained emergency resources and challenged every aspect of long-term recovery. Tragically, at least 30 lives were lost, marking one of the deadliest wildfire events in LA’s history. (HA)
