Ben Carson’s Fiery Ordeal

“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you.” – 1 Peter 4:12

Ben Carson is under fire like never before, and it may be exactly what he needs.

In his book “Gifted Hands,” Carson said he was offered a “full scholarship” to West Point when he was 17. Politico claimed this is false because West Point has no record of Carson ever applying to or being accepted at their school. The news site also claimed Carson’s campaign admitted fabricating the story. Politico later softened its accusatory headline.

Carson was technically wrong in that West Point does not offer full scholarships. But both he and his campaign have made it clear he never applied to, nor was he accepted, at West Point.

In a press conference Friday evening, Carson faced a roomful of rabid reporters who grilled him mercilessly about the story. But to his credit, the normally soft-spoken man took them on with gusto, even turning the tables on them, asking why they never cared to ask Obama about his questionable associations or sealed college records.

The reason reporters are supposedly going after Carson is that anyone running for president needs to be truthful. But think of them applying that same standard to Obama!

On Saturday, Carson sarcastically thanked the mainstream media for a $3.5 million fundraising surge this week.

I do not know the full story regarding Ben Carson and West Point, or the veracity of the other stories of his past that are now being questioned. But I do know it’s clear that he is a member of a “club” that is very threatening to liberals – black conservatives.

And I’m sure the Democrats and media got nervous when a Survey USA poll was released this week showing both Trump and Carson beating Hillary Clinton in Florida.

Ben Carson is certainly not the first “uppity” black conservative to be attacked. Who can forget the “high-tech lynching” Justice Clarence Thomas endured while being confirmed to the Supreme Court? Or the way the media hounded Herman Cain in the 2012 race?

Democrats have had a 50-plus year stranglehold on the black vote, and if they lose their grip they’re done. They can’t allow that to happen.

The treatment of black conservatives is reminiscent of the treatment meted out on runaway slaves – they must be made an example of so that the other slaves will not even think about escaping.

Up until now, I have noticed a contrast between a man like Donald Trump and Ben Carson. Trump was very close to his father growing up, and that is noticeable in his level of courage and confidence. In contrast, Ben Carson was raised by a single mother; and though by all accounts she did a tremendous job raising him, she still could not replace a father in his life.

Much has been said this past week regarding some of Ben’s statements in his books –including that he tried to stab another boy and threatened to hit his mother over the head with a hammer. These are clues that not all was rosy in his home. A boy will often react in anger toward his mother, especially when she is the lone disciplinarian, and especially when she – as is often the case – compensates for her lack of natural authority with frustration and anger.

The presidency of the United States is unquestionably a very tough job. To perform the job well requires a great deal of courage, the kind of courage that is typically built by the presence of a good father in the home. But there are exceptions to the rule. Ronald Reagan became one of the greatest of all presidents, and his father was an alcoholic who was far from a positive influence in his life. Reagan was somehow able to find a connection to his heavenly father, and that made all the difference.

Ben Carson has written that, to help him overcome his violent temper, he sought the Book of Proverbs and applied verses on anger. I don’t doubt that helped him, but his current ordeal will really help him – if he handles it with the right attitude – grow his spiritual roots deep and strong.

Before this situation arose, it appeared to some that Carson was being propped up by the media and the Republican Party as a hedge against Donald Trump. His debate performances were not solid, and some of his statements odd. It appeared that the party and the media could take him down at the time of their choosing.

But now, Ben has been given a golden opportunity to grow in courage. Indeed, during Friday’s press conference, he showed the fire and fortitude that many have complained had been lacking.

Indeed, if Ben Carson is able to go through this current challenge with grace, and grow in courage and wisdom because of it, it will be a powerful witness to every American. And whether he becomes president or not, he will have fulfilled a very important purpose, indeed.
