My new book The History of Jihad From Muhammad to ISIS is nothing less than the crown and culmination of all my work, the cap to my two decades of public efforts to alert people to the nature and magnitude of the global jihad threat.
This new book is in a sense the third of a trilogy. I’ve written a guide to the Qur’an – The Complete Infidel’s Guide to the Koran — exposing the Qur’an’s passages enjoining violence and oppression, and showing how they’re understood in mainstream Islamic tradition. I’ve written a biography of Muhammad: The Truth About Muhammad, based on the earliest Islamic sources, and showing that believing Muslims understood Muhammad as teaching that Muslims must wage war against and subjugate unbelievers.
But there persists in the U.S. (and in Europe) the prevailing notion that regardless of whatever the Qur’an says and Muhammad is said to have done, in practice the rule of Islam has been benign, magnanimous and tolerant. I find that taken for granted even among people who are informed and resolute about the nature and magnitude of the jihad threat today. The History of Jihad From Muhammad to ISIS is designed to shatter these historical myths, and to show how they’re intended to direct (and deform) public policy today.
This book demonstrates that there is no period since the beginning of Islam that was characterized by large-scale peaceful coexistence between Muslims and non-Muslims. There was no time when mainstream and dominant Islamic authorities taught the equality of non-Muslims with Muslims, or the obsolescence of jihad warfare. There was no Era of Good Feeling, no Golden Age of Tolerance, no Paradise of Proto-Multiculturalism. There has always been, with virtually no interruption, jihad, everywhere Muslims and non-Muslims have lived in close proximity with one another.
The public policy implications are massive, for our international alliances, our expectations of Islamic groups in the U.S., and much more. I hope therefore that this book will come to the attention of some people who can influence public policy, and that it will guide them to discard at least some of the foolish and false assumptions that have steered U.S. foreign policy for decades, and to place our foreign and domestic policies on a more realistic footing. Even if that does not happen, I hope this book will arm some people and help them stand for the truth amid the prevailing disinformation. Eventually, the truth will prevail, and this book is my bid to preserve the truth about Islam and jihad until the conditions are such that it can prevail.
