North Carolina: Sheriff Accused Of Plotting Murder Of Deputy For Exposing Him As Racist
Granville County, North Carolina now has a scandal of epic proportions as the sheriff has not only been outted as a racist with incriminating evidence but also plotting the murder of his deputy who obtained the evidence to expose him.
Granville County Sheriff Brindell Wilkins was recorded by Deputy Joshua Freeman in conversations that characterize Wilkins as a racist.
Mr. Freeman had a recording of Wilkins making “racially offensive” comments, according to the indictment.
Apparently, Sheriff Wilkins didn’t think the right thing to do was to apologize and correct his behavior, but rather to seek to put a hit out on Deputy Freeman; and for that; Sheriff Wilkins has now been charged with “two counts of felony obstruction of justice for withholding knowledge of a credible threat made against Joshua Freeman.”
According to USA Today:
Wilkins instructed an unnamed person to murder the deputy who was planning to publicly reveal a tape of him using “racially offensive language to authorities in Raleigh” in August 2014, according to a felony indictment unsealed Monday. Wilkins allegedly said “the only way to stop him is kill him,” and encouraged the individual to “take care of it.”
After obtaining the services of the hit man, Sheriff Wilkins then directed him on when, where and how to carry out the murder of Freeman.
The sheriff discussed the time and location where the murder might occur with the would-be assassin, according to the indictment. He also counseled him on how to avoid getting caught, telling him that if “you ain’t got the weapon, you ain’t got nothing to go on,” the indictment alleges.
Additionally, Wilkins is alleged to have told the hit man that he would be quiet and not involve authorities.
“The only way we find out these murder things is people talk,” Wilkins said, according to court records. “You can’t tell nobody nothin’, not a thing.”
Wilkins has been serving in the capacity of sheriff since 2009. According to the district attorney, “Technically, he can continue to serve if he chooses to until convicted.”
Sheriff Wilkins has been released from custody on a $20,000 bond. He is due in court on October 9.
However, this issue is not his only concern.
The report goes on to state that there is another investigation into the sheriff’s office involving “accounting practices and controlled substance interdiction efforts,” which is ongoing.
