Every law is the legislation of morality. When people deny this is so, they usually are confusing the terms. Yes it is true that we cannot change someone’s heart, we cannot force them to faith in Christ by legislation, yet every piece of legislation crafted is expressing that one thing is right and something else is wrong. One thing is just, something else is unjust. One thing is good and something else is evil. It is all an expression of the values of the legislator.

I am amazed that many people don’t see clearly through this ruse. I was speaking to a candidate for State Delegate in Maryland a week and a half ago, asking him about his position on abortion. He refused to answer my questions, questions that would clearly establish when he believed human life began, and if it was moral to kill the baby as it exits the womb as is done in partial birth abortion. While he refused to answer my questions he continually denigrated my stance, as he said, “How dare you impose your morality on other people”! By the way he was recently the “Pastor” of a large church in Annapolis. How interesting!

He was offended by me simply asking him questions, but he’s the one running for office, not me! Yet he, if elected, will be voting on legislation and, therefore, imposing his morality, or I should say his immortality, on the entire State of Maryland. Why is it that he could not see the hypocrisy of his position? Why? Because of the successful de-christianization of America.

Every law imposes someone’s morality on society. The only question is will it be the moral absolutes of the Creator of the Universe, that is the Law of God given to us in His Holy Word, or will it be the immorality of a thousand different propagandists who are ultimately animated by the one enemy of the One True God, Satan himself.

One of the big debates among those who adhere to the authority and absolute inerrancy of the Bible is what laws in the Old Testament apply to whom? In this series we are focused on the Ten Commandments. Some argue that the first table of the law, which contains the duties we owe to God, are never in the arena of civil government enforcement. Thus, when we’ve spoken about the laws against blasphemy as applications of the third commandment, they would say such laws are unbiblical. And to be consistent they would say that all the blue laws (laws relating to the Fourth Commandment prohibiting all but absolutely necessary work on the Lord’s Day) are also unbiblical.

The idea would be that we must not enforce the first half of the Ten Commandments upon those who are not Christians. Let’s put this idea to the test by looking at the actual text of the Fourth Commandment. Exodus 20:8-11.

Who is to Remember the Sabbath?—Exodus 20:8-11

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

As we examine the Fourth Commandment we see that it is clearly linked to the Creation account, the Six days of Creation and the Seventh day of rest. So too, the Lord’s Day, the first day of the week, in a parallel fashion is linked directly to the New Creation. A New Covenant linked to A New Creation.

I believe C.S. Lewis was correct when he wrote in Mere Christianity, “If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.” Both the Sabbath and Communion point us to exact historic events – Mount Sinai and Mount Calvary, all the while pointing us forwards to the eternal rest that we will enjoy in God’s presence forever.

Speaking of enjoying God’s presence forever, a little girl was taking an evening walk with her father. Wonderingly, she looked up at the stars and exclaimed; “Oh, Daddy, if the wrong side of heaven is so beautiful, what must the right side be”! Let us keep the Sabbath, and remember the Lord’s Table with an eye towards our eternal home where we shall Commune with our Lord and serve Him forever.
