The Covid-19 “Crisis” – Introduction (Video)

For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light.” -Luke 8:17

As a theologian, I oftentimes get asked “Why would God allow something like the Corona Virus” or “What do you think God is doing by allowing this worldwide pandemic? (sic). Unfortunately, those Christian leaders who are supposed to have an “ear to hear” and enough biblical knowledge to inform the people what is happening and how Christians are to respond, simply reply to these questions with the same theological rhetoric that they give for every question.

Christianity in America is quite frankly broken. This should not surprise us. When Christ came the first time, most of His contentious arguments were with the spiritual and political leaders of the day over the proper interpretation and application of scripture. At one point, Christ even told the Sadducees “You err not knowing the scripture” (Matthew 22:29). Sadly, today, many pastor’s Bibles are only about 30 verses deep. Their whole theology can be summed up with the following three bullet points: “1. Love God. 2. Love your Neighbor. 3. Obey your government. If we do these three things, we will be good witnesses for Christ.” Unfortunately, this spiritually lazy answer is given for nearly every question with which we are faced.

During the coronavirus shutdown of Churches in the spring, I taught a series of lessons dealing with all of the issues that we were facing. Whenever a question arose about how a believer is to deal with a particular issue, I searched the Scriptures (Acts 17:11) in order to faithfully speak as the oracles of God (1 Peter 4:11). The Bible contains over 31,000 verses and we cannot cherry-pick our favorite Scriptures and shoehorn them into every situation. We have to start with the understanding that All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Tim. 3:16-17) and not just our favorite 30 verses. To understand what we must do, we must first find the proper context and then be able to draw from the “whole council of God’s word” (Acts 20:27) in order to gain a divine perspective of the situation and to determine a proper biblical course of action.

The Bible is profitable for teaching us how to respond to fear; how to respond to a pandemic; and even what Christ would say and do about government-mandated lockdowns and face masks. None of this is what you hearing from most of the pulpits of America. As a result, we have become a nation of the blind (both politically and spiritually) leading the blind. If Christ were here, His advice would be the same as it was in His day… “Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch” (Matthew 15:14). As Christians, we can rest in the sovereignty of God. For what the enemies of mankind have intended for evil, God intends for good. (Genesis 50:20)
