Trump Claims Cave On Government Shutdown Wasn’t “Concession,” But Is That True?

Too many people in politics and those that follow them want to say and believe whatever they want to believe but facts are stubborn things.  After President Donald Trump caved by reopening the government without his wall funding, and yes it was a cave which I will demonstrate shortly, Democrats rejoiced and gloated over it.  However, Trump was quick to claim that he had not conceded anything, but the question is, is that true?

First, let’s listen to what President Trump has said in the past about the government shutdown and how it will continue until he gets wall funding from Congress.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Back in the middle of December 2018, after Republicans lost the House of Representatives, but were able to hold onto the US Senate, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and President Trump met in front of the cameras for a WWE-style shouting match over funding the border wall on the US border wall with Mexico.

Here’s a reminder in living color.

Trump states clearly that he’s going to shutdown the government until he gets the funding from Congress for the wall.

‘I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck, because the people of this country don’t want criminals and people that have lots of problems and drugs pouring into our country. So I will take the mantle,’ he said. ‘I will be the one to shut it down. I’m not going to blame you for it. The last time you shut it down, it didn’t work. I will take the mantle of shutting down.’

Well, he did shut it down, the longest in history.

Just a few days later, he let Congress know he wouldn’t sign their bill because it didn’t include border wall funding, and issued these tweets.

Notice, the George H. W. Bush-esque statement, “I will not sign any of their legislation, including infrastructure, unless it has perfect Border Security.”  He means, unless it contains funding for the wall.

He then reminded us of his promise to never sign anything like the omnibus bill he signed in his first year in office if it didn’t have border wall funding.

“When I begrudgingly signed the Omnibus Bill, I was promised the Wall and Border Security by leadership. Would be done by end of year (NOW). It didn’t happen! We foolishly fight for Border Security for other countries – but not for our beloved U.S.A. Not good!” he tweeted.

He went on to promise that the government shutdown would last a very long time.

“The Democrats are trying to belittle the concept of a Wall, calling it old fashioned. The fact is there is nothing else’s that will work, and that has been true for thousands of years. It’s like the wheel, there is nothing better. I know tech better than anyone, & technology …..on a Border is only effective in conjunction with a Wall. Properly designed and built Walls work, and the Democrats are lying when they say they don’t. In Israel the Wall is 99.9% successful. Will not be any different on our Southern Border! Hundreds of $Billions saved!” Trump tweeted on December 21.

Trump then warned, “The Democrats, whose votes we need in the Senate, will probably vote against Border Security and the Wall even though they know it is DESPERATELY NEEDED. If the Dems vote no, there will be a shutdown that will last for a very long time. People don’t want Open Borders and Crime!”

Now, in all fairness, President Trump did promise to build the wall “one way or another.”

However, if he was going to cave on the shutdown because of federal employees not receiving money, he should have never put on the poker face, in my opinion.  He should have just kept signing things to keep the government open and continued to talk about the wall.

But he didn’t.  He blinked.

And while he wants to say he didn’t cave to Pelosi and Schumer, he did, but he will continue to push for a wall, one way or another.

“We really have no choice but to build a powerful wall or steel barrier. If we don’t get a fair deal from Congress, the government will either shutdown on February 15 again or I will use the powers afforded to me…to address this emergency,” Trump said.

“I wish people would read or listen to my words on the Border Wall.  This was in no way a concession. It was taking care of millions of people who were getting badly hurt by the Shutdown with the understanding that in 21 days, if no deal is done, it’s off to the races!” he tweeted.

Actually, it is a concession as I referenced his statements with regard to the shutdown being tied to Border Security and the wall.  He gave in the pressure of funding federal employees, those who worked and those who didn’t, including “non-essential” workers, and kicked another shutdown down the road into February, where we’ll see this act take place again.

However, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted, “In 21 days President @realDonaldTrump is moving forward building the wall with or without the Democrats. The only outstanding question is whether the Democrats want something or nothing.”

Want something or not?  If that is the case, why even have negotiations?  And if Congress isn’t authorizing money for this part of government to function, where is it getting this money?

CNN reports that the White House has apparently discovered $7 billion to build the wall and is in the process of drafting an order to build it with that money, which again, if Congress has to fund the very budget they are getting this money, and they are in a stalemate, where are they getting it?

The White House is preparing a draft proclamation for President Donald Trump to declare a national emergency along the southern border and has identified more than $7 billion in potential funds for his signature border wall should he go that route, according to internal documents reviewed by CNN.

Trump has not ruled out using his authority to declare a national emergency and direct the Defense Department to construct a border wall as Congress and the White House fight over a deal to end the government shutdown. But while Trump’s advisers remain divided on the issue, the White House has been moving forward with alternative plans that would bypass Congress.

He didn’t just cave on this either, he caved on the State of the Union speech.

Well, I guess it’s officially over, till the American public are put back through it in February.

In my opinion, and I think the facts bear it out, Trump caved.  Sure, he’s gonna push for his wall and such, but I predict that it will face a flurry of lawsuits and judge’s ruling he can’t do it, and it will go through the rest of his term in office, much like the travel ban did, and not much will get done with it.  And this will be used to cover for attacks on more of our rights, including Red Flag laws to go after our guns.  Watch and see.
