Who Owns the Family?

This week, I had a bit of an unnerving experience. Just having new tires put on the car, Neil, Joe, and I were driving back from a speech I gave in Northern Baltimore County. It seemed like there was some additional noise from the rear of the car, and it seemed at certain speeds to vibrate more than normal. I got to wondering if perhaps they didn’t balance the tires properly or if there was some other mechanical problem.

It never entered my thoughts that it could be more serious than that. But after dropping Neil off, I mentioned it to Joe, and he agreed it seemed noisier than it should be. We stopped, got out, and I stooped down to look at the rear tire, and just perchance touched the lug nut—and it moved! I could turn all the nuts with my fingers. The mechanic hadn’t properly tightened the lug nuts, which hold the tire to the axle.

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

Every mile we had driven, the nuts had been working their way towards the ends of the bolts. Had we not stopped, there would have been a disaster. Joe and I quickly remedied the mistake and then checked to see that the lug nuts on the other three tires were properly secured. It would have been a disastrous accident at 65 miles per hour had that tire completely separated from the car. I am grateful to our Lord and Savior for protecting us and having us catch the error before it was too late.

I got to thinking about that this week, in relation to what is happening in America today. Are there errors that have been made, like leaving the lug nuts loose, that will lead to a disastrous wreck for our country? Have we reached a point where the wheels are about to come off? If so, can we stop the car, step out with a tool in hand, and tighten down the lug nuts to prevent this disaster?

I believe the answer to each of these questions is a resounding YES. Out of all the issues which are making the largest impact for ill in our culture, the battle for who owns the family is uppermost. Let’s go back to the beginning—Genesis 2. Thus far in our series The King Has Come, we have witnessed the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, where He was proclaimed and honored as King of kings. Then we saw the following Sunday, as He rose from the dead, He was declared King of life itself. Then in this series we began to look at the implications of the fact that the King, King Jesus has Come, in that we began to sketch the outlines of a Biblical Worldview, looking first at the realm of politics and what Scripture says to that realm, then at economics and education and on to looking at the belief systems of the world in light of the fact that Jesus Christ is King and Lord of all. Then we saw two weeks ago the event we call the Ascension, where 40 days following the resurrection, Jesus ascended to the throne room of heaven where He now, fully glorified, rules the Universe. Then, last week, we saw the blessed gift the Father and the Son have given to us – the Holy Spirit who descended on the day of Pentecost to indwell, empower, and equip believers.

Today, I would like to address the issue of a Biblical worldview regarding the family and look at the attack upon the family, the forces which have been loosening the lug nuts of our society. You’ll recall in Genesis 1 that God made Adam from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. And then God made Eve by taking a rib from Adam; He didn’t make Eve the same way He had made Adam. God fashioned Eve from that rib He had surgically removed from Adam. When Adam awoke from his surgery, this is what Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Now we hear God interject the following statement, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.”

Atheists, Evolutionist, and others deny God created the family. They claim the family was invented by man, and thus it’s no wonder why they think man can “evolve” it. The truth is, however, family is God’s property. He created it! He designed it! He set forth its functions and ordained its purpose.
