Revolutionary Pulpits: The Last Hope of a Dying Republic

Christian teachings were the seed-thoughts of our political constitutions, and Christian evangelism was the inspiration of American colonization. If we eliminate from our national history the direct and all-powerful influence of the Christian religion, we have nothing left but a set of disjointed facts without significance, dry and dreary annals without parentage or posterity. But on the other hand, a right apprehension of all the formative forces in our national life will vindicate the matured judgment of Emerson that ‘our whole history appears like a last effort of Divine Providence in behalf of the human race.’  (Bishop Charles Galloway, Christianity and the American Commonwealth, 1898)

The greatest threat to any civilization is abandonment of God’s moral standard, for He adjudicates the bounds and duration of their existence by His immutable nature, which is on display, day after day, and night after night, in His handiwork.

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handiwork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world (Psalm 19:1-4).

Will this presidential election be the most important in American history?

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse (Romans 1:20).

He reminds the inhabitants of earth through the Prophet Isaiah that the sum of “the nations are as a drop of a bucket (Isaiah 40:15).” Kingdoms rise and fall by His decree. When He speaks concerning a nation to “uproot, pull down, and destroy it,” it withers away and is no more (Jeremiah 8:17). Nothing can contravene His decree, and “there is none that can deliver out of His hand (Isaiah 43:13).” The combined armies of earth are as the chaff before our God who “is a consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:29).

The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, ‘Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.’ He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision (Psalm 2:2-4).

Men and nations that pervert the truth to accommodate evil, forget that truth is immutable. It is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and dispassionately objective. It is not swayed by prevailing public sentiment or hatred. It cares not how a legislature votes, how a judge rules, or what a court of public opinion thinks. It has no need to be admired, applauded, or affirmed, and is content to travel alone. We do not judge the Truth; the truth judges us. It regards all men as equals and is no respecter of persons. Either we will be broken by falling upon it, or it will fall upon us and grind us into powder (Matthew 21:44).

There are indeed those in America who are good, but Americans can no longer claim goodness as a nation when the legislatures and courts constituted by our self-serving political ambivalence has given legislative and jurisprudential sanction to the wanton slaughter of more than more than fifty million unborn Americans, and more recently, the vile behaviors that in a single day turned the “cities of the plain” (a.k.a. Sodom and Gomorrah) into a permanent ashen warning to nations that would follow suit.

Do not the heavens and earth testify that abortion is murder and transgresses the Fifth Commandment, precipitating a curse from the earth on perpetrator and accomplice(s), as it “opens its mouth to receive the blood” of the slain (Genesis 4:11)? Does history not bear out that the Cain’s of earth invariably become fugitives and vagabonds all their days? Does the Law of God not say that “blood defiles the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it (Numbers 35:33)?” The wrath of God has come upon us “to the uttermost,” (1 Thessalonians 2:16) for the American landscape is drenched in the blood of the Innocents.

Does nature itself not teach us that sodomy insults the Imago Dei (English: Image of God), which God constituted in Adam as the first government on earth, giving them (“male and female created He them”-Genesis 1:27) dominion over all that He had made, and commanding them to extend the glorious liberty of their reign by procreating with alacrity (Genesis 1:28)? Does not the militant homosexual effort to pervert the Imago Dei as expressed in the perfect indivisible-until-severed-by-death union between one man and one woman, strike at the very foundation of Liberty and its propagation throughout the earth?

Is not America’s obstinate obsession with abortion and sodomy, and the American Pulpit’s passive tolerance of these vicious assaults on God’s image, a clarion invitation to Tyranny, “Come and rule over us?” Do these behaviors not inure to the enslavement and destruction of ourselves and of our Posterity, and will our Creator not hold us accountable for failure to fulfill our duty to oppose them?

At the outset of evil, sinful nations do not immediately experience the full weight of Heaven’s wrath, but by persisting in evil, “store up unto themselves wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God (Romans 2:5).” But when the sinful sludge of a rebellious nation piles up to the point that it is now lapping at heaven’s pure shore, it inevitably unleashes the wrath of God on its source for persisting in “exchanging the truth of God for a lie, and worshipping and serving the creature in lieu of the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen (Romans 1:25).”

Until recent decades, the American pulpit embraced a revolutionary purpose as curator and exponent of the “whole counsel of God,” resulting in a ubiquitous, healthy fear of God among the American people. Colonial ministers were chief advocates of the political ideology embodied in our nation’s Founding Charters. The historical evidence is irrefutable: the colonial pulpit, set ablaze by the Great Awakening, became the Foundry of America’s Charters of Freedom.  Modern historians have confirmed that the rights asserted in our Founding Charters were preached from colonial pulpits in the fifteen years that culminated in the Battle of Lexington. The clergy were not just spectators that cheered from the sideline of the Rebellion. They stood out among chief agitators of the Revolution, and after it began, among the most successful in keeping revolutionary ardor alive, both from the pulpit and on the battlefield.

Today’s Pulpit, however, has forgotten its legacy and largely abandoned the inconvenient truths of Scripture that engender the fear of God and behavior that is conducive to Liberty, opting instead for market-driven “messaging” that scratches itching ears, and anesthetizes consciences. Much of that which passes for Bible-based preaching today is devoid of power to convince hearts of sin and restore broken lives. In the quest for a more palatable way to maintain attendance and charitable revenue, American pulpits are unwittingly “hewing out cisterns” (Jeremiah 2:13) that cannot retain an enduring move of the Holy Spirit, and produce washed-out salt in the pew, that Jesus warned would be “good for nothing” but road salt, to be “tossed out and trodden underfoot of men.”

God’s people need to learn what it means to be “the salt of the earth (Matthew 5:13).” When Jesus spoke of salt losing its saltiness, He was not referring to the reticence of some to preach the gospel, or the flavor-enhancing qualities of table salt. He was talking about the vital curative and preservative characteristics of salt and His intent that it infuse the warp and woof of its temporal sojourn, including, but not limited to civil government.

The true “sons of Liberty,” whose manifestation is yearned for by all of Creation, (Romans 8:19) are those who have been “set free indeed” by the Son of God (John 8:36). If the habitation of the Spirit is the locus of Liberty, it follows that anyone and anyplace that is not His habitation is, to a greater or lesser degree, in bondage. Liberty, like Tyranny, is fundamentally spiritual and spiritually appraised (1 Corinthians 2:14). Comprehension of its essential meaning is the exclusive domain of those who are born of the Spirit of God and have been transformed by the renewing of their minds. The “sons of disobedience” have no part or lot in Liberty, save the functional freedom obtained for them by the salt of the earth (a.k.a. the Church) in the fulfillment of its vital curative mission.

The essential meaning of Liberty is beyond the reach of unregenerate minds, because they are controlled by “the prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:2).” The popular notion that ministers and their flocks ought to avoid active involvement in “the dirty business of politics,” or limit their interaction with government to the voting booth, comes not from God, but is a damnable heresy conceived by the prince of darkness. The Church in America has largely abandoned its curative mission in government, precisely because it has been indoctrinated by the pulpit, which has allowed itself to be indoctrinated and its voice constrained by a practical gnosis that originated with the spirit of the age working in and through the children of tyranny.

The Pulpit’s failure to equip God’s flock with the knowledge needed to steward the “Blessings of Liberty to itself and to its Posterity,” has facilitated their antipathy toward electoral politics and, for the abysmal few that do participate in elections, unwitting support for “wolves in sheep’s clothing” in the voting booth. The failure to equip God’s Flock with a biblical worldview, is a failure to shepherd them to safe haven (i.e. “green pastures”) where they are able to lie down in the presence of their enemies and be nourished by “every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4).” Neglect of this ecclesial duty is tantamount to fattening sheep for slaughter.

America will indeed perish unless her pulpits quickly rediscover their Founding legacy and become the “pulpits aflame with righteousness” that French philosopher Alexander de Tocqueville astutely observed and reported in his time as the reason for America’s “greatness and genius.” Revolutionary pulpits, garrisoned by men of courage and conviction, the Black Robe Regiments of America, are the only thing that can save the American Republic now.

The Black Robed Regiment of Virginia will continue to do its part in spite of a generally unsupportive ecclesial culture, to enlist clergy in the Cause.
