Florida Court Blocks Surgical Abortions at Kissimmee Planned Parenthood

Kissimmee, FL – A Florida Court of Appeals has ruled that Planned Parenthood‘s recently opened facility in Kissimmee cannot provide surgical abortions because the procedures violate restrictions placed on facilities in the medical park where the abortion clinic is located.

Planned Parenthood located to the Oak Commons Medical Park, owned by MMB Properties, and opened in July 2014, under the false pretenses of being a “doctor’s office.”

The “declaration of restrictions” for facilities within the Oak Commons Medical Park clearly states that property cannot be used as an “Outpatient Surgical Center.”

At first, Planned Parenthood attempted to argue that the abortions they refer to as “in office” procedures do not constitute “surgery,” but dropped that spurious argument upon appeal.

The Court’s ruling lifts a stay on a previous injunction issued last year and allows the injunction to once again take effect.

However, the 8,800 square foot Planned Parenthood facility, which is an affiliate of Planned Parenthood of Greater Orlando, Inc., is allowed to continue providing the abortion pill, at least for now.

“This isn’t the first time Planned Parenthood has used deception to open an abortion business, and it probably won’t be the last,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “No one wants to an abortion clinic on their property because they know it will drive away business from other offices and ultimately devalue their investment. About the only way Planned Parenthood can relocate is to lie about what they actually do. But this time they were caught and held accountable for their deception.”

With the loss of the highly profitable surgical abortions, there is now some doubt about whether Planned Parenthood’s Kissimmee office can be financially solvent.

“It may be that this huge building will become an economic albatross for Planned Parenthood of Greater Orlando. It would be poetic justice if its own deceptive behavior led to its financial ruin,” said Newman.

Now that the Kissimmee Planned Parenthood can no longer sell surgical abortions, the number of surgical abortion clinics left in the U.S. stands at 547, down 74 percent from 2,176 clinics in 1991.
