Report: Russian Sub Leaking Radiation 100,000 Times Higher Than Normal

In light of the speculations over the avoidance of a “planetary catastrophe” last week by a Russian submarine that caught fire and killed 14 Russian Navy seamen, a report is out that document that a sunken Soviet-era submarine that has been at the bottom of the Arctic for 30 years is leaking radiation into the ocean in excess of 100,000 times.  What’s worse is that reading is higher than those taken just twelve years ago.

The report comes from a report from Norwegian news outlet TV2 from researchers in Norway who discovered the findings.

Water samples were taken from the sub and around it.

According to TV2:

It became clear that on Monday afternoon water samples were taken from a ventilation pipe on the failed submarine.

Two other samples taken at the same site earlier in the day showed no rash, but the last sample shows a radioactive level that is 100,000 times higher than in plain, clean seawater.

The level that was measured is also somewhat higher than the Russian researchers measured 12 years ago.

The report went on to point out:

It became clear that on Monday afternoon water samples were taken from a ventilation pipe on the failed submarine.

Below are photos of the submarine.

According to the Moscow Times, “The Komsomolets sank in a section of the Barents Sea considered to be one of the world’s largest fishing areas in 1989, killing 42 of its 69 crew. Concerns about contamination from its nuclear reactor have not yet given way to an actual environmental crisis, and readings taken as recently as 2008 have shown no indication of a radiation leak.”

This report comes in the wake of the Russian submarine incident last week that took the life of 14 seaman.

There is still speculation as to what occurred.  The theories are from the sub was on a mission to cut large underwater cables tied to the internet to that the sub engaged a US sub off the coast of Alaska.  Speculation also abounds that the sub was carrying a cobalt thermo-nuclear bomb.

The truth remains surrounded by mystery.
