As we hear lie after lie, it has become very hard for us to believe much that our politicians say. They tell us that things are getting better, but many people are still without work. We are told that the world is safer and we like each other more, but we are seeing a rise in war and violence locally. So, when someone comes out and claims that Obama lied about the killing of Osama bin Laden, it is easy to believe.
Journalist Seymour Hersh made the allegations in a lengthy article for the London Review of Books. Among other charges, Hersh wrote that top Pakistani military leaders were informed of the U.S. mission in advance and helped facilitate it, despite repeated claims to the contrary.
Hersh does not name his source, which claims that not only were the Pakistanis privy to the mission, but worse. The source claims that Pakistan had had bin Laden since 2006.
Hersh writes:, “bin Laden had been a prisoner of the ISI at the Abbottabad compound since 2006; that Kayani and Pasha knew of the raid in advance and had made sure that the two helicopters delivering the Seals to Abbottabad could cross Pakistani airspace without triggering any alarms; that the CIA did not learn of bin Laden’s whereabouts by tracking his couriers, as the White House has claimed since May 2011, but from a former senior Pakistani intelligence officer who betrayed the secret in return for much of the $25 million reward offered by the US, and that, while Obama did order the raid and the Seal team did carry it out, many other aspects of the administration’s account were false.”
This sheds a bad light not only on the president, but also on the Navy and the CIA. According to Hersh and his unnamed source, all of these people would have to be complicit. It would also mean that these two Pakistanis would have been aware that their own people would have been killed in the raid and had assisted the U.S. killing them.
The White House’s response is classic Washington. Fox reports:
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest also said he’s not aware of any facts being withheld.
“The Obama White House is not the only one to observe that the story is riddled with inaccuracies and outright falsehoods,” Earnest said, citing recent criticism from other observers. “No one here is particularly concerned about it.”
Many will not run with this story because it seems that as long as the man is dead, who cares who knows what and when they knew. But, there are two things I would like to point out before we move on down the primrose path. This Hersh is a liberal and not a conservative. He is not looking to make Obama or Hillary look bad. Even more important in this is the thing he tells us these two Pakistanis did for the mission.
Hersh says, “Pasha and Kayani were responsible for ensuring that Pakistan’s army and air defence command would not track or engage with the US helicopters used on the mission. The American cell at Tarbela Ghazi was charged with co-ordinating communications between the ISI, the senior US officers at their command post in Afghanistan, and the two Black Hawk helicopters; the goal was to ensure that no stray Pakistani fighter plane on border patrol spotted the intruders and took action to stop them.”
It had always been a mystery as to how the SEALS were able to enter and leave Pakistan undetected. This is the one portion of this story that rings true. If not the two men named, then someone had to be working for us on the inside. If not, the operation would have been dead before it began.
Yea! Another White House scandal.
